about

twofold returns for their first release of 2024 with a triumphant double-length remix compilation, 22XL Remixes, available now through Bandcamp and digital streaming platforms.

22XL Remixes features a packed setlist of revamps of tracks from twofold’s legendary 22222222 run of singles by the artist’s contemporaries, friends, and collaborators, a veritable roll-call of underground talents whose diverse reworks of twofold’s signature style situate the compilation halfway between a sprawling DJ set and a panoramic snapshot of 2024’s fractalized club music landscape. These remixes showcase the connections twofold’s music has created across different musical geographies and subgenres, spinning from trip-hop and hard techno to UK garage and footwork in just over half the compilation’s length.

twofold celebrates their peers’ skills to great effect here, showcasing tracks like “BLACK (Alparr Remix)”, “SCRAP HEAP (Rei Low Remix)” and “Out My Lane (Lamar Remix),” which bring the deconstruction in full force with wet, lurching sound design, laser-speed glitches and warped synths. Meanwhile, “BLACK (C Powers Remix),” “Ad Infinitum (Abby Dear Remix),” and “Ad Infinitum (Lavi Remix)” call back to classic dance styles, channeling UK garage, electro house, and time-tested breakbeats. “Bad Behavior (Dee Belvedere Remix)” flirts with chaos, mashing ebullient blips and drum chops with fuzzy 808s and twofold’s trademark cavalcades of sound effects.

Things speed up with “Bad Behavior (Sophiaaaahjkl;8901's #BUSINESSTECHNO Edit),” “Like That (Gem Remix)” and “Ad Infinitum (secat Remix),” covering rave-inflected hardtechno, icy-cold footwork and colorful juke beats. Then, “Close Call (hyphyskazerbox Remix),” “Drive You Crazy (hyphyskazerbox Remix),” ”BLACK (crai bbyy This Exorcism is Sponsored By Telfar Global Remix),” and “SCRAP HEAP (Tank Jr. Remix)” build to a chaotic climax in the form of manic cybertrash-electro swing, unapologetically Black sound collage, and a twisted blend of New Orleans bounce and uptempo hardcore. Slower tracks interspersed between these knockout punches give listeners a moment to breathe, exploring dubbed-out ambient on “Like That (unown B.O.S. Remix)” and stylish trip-hop atmosphere in “Out My Lane (Sophiaaaahjkl;8901 Remix)”.

As the compilation winds down, more singular strains of club music start to surface. “Ad Infinitum (Zvrra Remix)” and “Drive You Crazy (Jawsnap Remix)” present new takes on mecha, the hypnotic cyborg-mechanical genre that Zvrra pioneered in 2020 with her “Snapped 2” EP; “Ad Infinitum (Nondi_ Remix)” reaches to uncharted territories with its bit-crushed, pointillistic fusion of gqom and baile funk.

The compilation concludes with a new variation-in-production from twofold themself of “Out My Lane” accompanied by remastered versions of the original tracks from the 2022 22222222 series.

When speaking about the compilation, twofold says: “My priority was to center the artists I work closely with and make connections between my friends online and my friends in Atlanta’s underground electronic music scenes. I wanted to draw a coherent narrative through these different spaces and voices. A lot of my thought process with this record was inspired by that of artists like Kelela, where the remix album becomes an opportunity to give a project a second life through re-inventing its original sound.

“I’ve also said that trading remixes is my favorite form of collaboration, because I love having the freedom to play with something that already exists and watching how two creative contexts react to one another. Getting to hear so many different takes on these tracks has been extremely rewarding for me, and it’s brought so much fresh air to the original tracks. I’ve been so, so excited to share this project, and I’m thrilled that it’s finally here!”

22XL Remixes releases on March 22, 2024 on the twofold Bandcamp page and all digital streaming platforms. Two singles, “BLACK (Alparr Remix)” and “Out My Lane (Lamar Remix),” are available for digital pre-order on Bandcamp now.
